Early Leadership The Apache Years
Shannon’s leadership journey began in uniform, where she faced the rigor, discipline, and uncertainty of flying the Apache helicopter. She learned firsthand that grit isn’t just persistence, it’s grounded in clarity of purpose.
Her military experience taught her how to:
Lead with decisiveness under pressure
In the cockpit, hesitation wasn’t an option. Shannon learned to absorb information quickly and act with confidence under pressure, shaping her leadership style and guiding how she teaches others.
Build high-performing teams in extreme conditions
Flying the Apache required trust and coordination. Shannon developed teams that communicate, support each other, and stay aligned in unpredictable conditions. She helps leaders build resilient, cohesive teams.
Navigate complex challenges with courage and strategy
In combat zones or dynamic missions, Shannon learned to simplify complexity and stay focused. She teaches leaders to tackle challenges with strategic thinking and confidence.
From the Military to Corporate Leadership
After her military service, Shannon transitioned to corporate leadership at Microsoft, where she led teams through innovation, change, and high-stakes projects.
She then founded The Grit Institute to bring research-backed frameworks and real-world lessons from the military and corporate world to leaders across industries.

How Shannon Teaches
She speaks to organizations, conferences, and leadership teams worldwide, delivering experiences that combine:
Story: Real-world lessons from the cockpit and boardroom
Science: Evidence-based frameworks for grit, resilience, and purpose
Strategy: Practical tools leaders can apply immediately

Her Leadership Philosophy
Shannon believes that grit is grounded and holistic. If grit is what people see, older practices are the underground stream that feeds it: attention, rest, reflection and community, the habits people have leaned on for centuries. She explores them in her forthcoming book, The Forgotten Ways: Returning to Ancient Wisdom in a Modern World. Start with her free guide, 5 Ancient Practices That Build Unshakeable Leaders. True leadership emerges when purpose guides action. At The Grit Institute, she equips leaders to:
Align their actions with meaningful purpose
Build resilient teams that thrive under pressure
Lead with authenticity, courage, and clarity

What Grounds Her Life
Shannon lives with her husband, two boys and a menagerie of pets in the rural urban interface of Washington State, where she finds balance, clarity, and inspiration in nature. She is passionate about:
Mentoring women leaders and veterans
Creating meaningful learning experiences for leaders
Writing and storytelling as a tool for reflection and growth
